Jeanne, a shy young woman, lives at home with her uninhibited bartender mother and works the graveyard shift as a cleaner at an amusement park. Her mother wants her to meet a man, but Jeanne prefers tinkering in her bedroom with wires, light bulbs, and spare parts, creating miniature versions of theme park rides. During her late-night shifts she begins spending intimate time with the alluring new Tilt-A-Whirl ride that she decides to call Jumbo. Finding herself seduced by “his” red lights, smooth chrome, and oily hydraulics, Jeanne concludes that the thrilling new relationship she wants to pursue is with Jumbo.

2019, France. Comedy, Society, Technology, Dark Humour • 1h 48m

Like a whole series of Black Mirror in one film, these five darkly humorous, interlinking stories explore our increasing dependence upon digital media. Cyberstalking, social media, online shopping, swipe dating, vlogging – all come under its insightful gaze. Starring Fanny Sidney from Netflix hit Call My Agent, Selfie is much cleverer proposition than most anthology or portmanteau films, with characters and plot lines recurring throughout the different stories. As the web connections grow, the film builds towards a grande finale set at a wedding on an island with no mobile phone signal – until someone finds one, leading to an hilarious showdown. Given our increased reliance on technology to stay connected under the current Covid-19 lockdown, this is a wry commentary on the tyranny of internet connections and screens (Selfie is brought to you exclusively, and ironically, by the UK’s leading Virtual Cinema!).

Click here to watch a YourScreen interview with lead actor Fanny Sidney, also one of the stars of the hugely popular Netflix series Call My Agent.

“If one image here doesn’t tickle you, it’s easy enough to swipe to the next.” – Variety.

“Like any good anthology, each of these stories manage to be very different while still sharing a clear through line. Each one wittily takes a crack at our dependence on clicks, as well as how brave — and often stupid — anonymity can make us.” – Amelia Emberwing, What to Watch.

” Selfie therefore manages to fulfil its double promise by giving viewers a good time, while opening up avenues for them to think about the importance, not always happy, taken by digital technology in today’s society. A great success!” Antoine Corte, Bulles de Culture.

Dir: Richard Laxton, UK, 2014, 108 minutes, cert: 12A. Cast: Emma Thompson, Dakota Fanning, David Suchet.

Nineteen-year-old Effie Gray marries esteemed art critic John Ruskin, a cold and distant man who, seemingly repelled by his young bride, refuses to consummate their marriage. Neglected and shunned, and her health suffering from the strain of the crumbling relationship, Effie defies Victorian society by striking up a friendship with one of Ruskin’s acolytes, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painter John Everett Millais. It’s a friendship that blossoms into something else, and which sends shockwaves through polite society.

The film features a truly sterling ensemble cast including Greg Wise as Ruskin, and Tom Sturridge as Millais, with supporting roles from BAFTA winners James Fox, Robbie Coltrane, and two-time Oscar nominee Julie Walters.

Exquisitely made, with a witty and acerbic script exploring Victorian social and sexual mores, ‘Effie Gray’ is a sumptuous treat that will delight fans of ‘Rebecca’, ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

Dir: Cristi Puiu, France, 2020, 201 minutes, cert: 12A.

The guests who come to the mansion of aristocratic landowner and man of the world Nikolai over the Christmas holidays are hand-picked. Among them is a politician, a young countess and a general with his wife. They converse and dine – what a wonderful, much-missed way of life – indulge in parlour games and discuss the right form of authority in the face of political impotence as well as progress and morality, death and the Antichrist. As the debate becomes more heated, cultural differences become increasingly apparent and the mood grows tense.

‘Malmkrog’ was the recipient of the Encounters Award for Best Director (Cristi Puiu) at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2020, and also won Best Screenplay and a Golden Giraldillo for Best Film at the Seville European Film Festival in 2020.
