Tickets £5 full price / £4 concessions.Dir. Marc Fitoussi, France, 2022, 110 mins. Cast. Olivia Côte, Laure Calamy, Kristin Scott Thomas.Three feisty femmes – Laure Calamy, Olivia Côte and Kristin Scott Thomas – play estranged childhood friends who tentatively reunite for a trip to the Greek Islands. Recently divorced, and watching helplessly as her only son leaves home, Blandine (Olivia Côte) is struggling to find her footing again, so when her former best friend Magalie (Call My Agent’s Laure Calamy), loud and fearless, suddenly resurfaces, she allows herself to be spontaneous for a change. But as they head off towards their destination, it is soon apparent that Magalie’s very different approach to holidaying – and to life – could lead Blandine to her breaking point… and beyond. An unashamed crowd-pleaser with Kristin Scott Thomas getting in on the act and letting down her hair as a hippie jewellery maker called Bijou. The film emerges as a breezily delightful tale of female camaraderie, intermingled with laughter, tears and great scenery around Amorgos, where Luc Besson’s cult The Big Blue was shot. For detailed information about the film's age rating and content notices, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “Content Advice” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Francophiles rejoice – the French Film Festival is back! We’re delighted to welcome the French Film Festival UK again this year for a selection of some of the finest new French cinema, with 3 exclusive films not yet on general release. We are screening Tori and Lokita, Full Time, and Rodeo.

This is a change to the previously advertised programme. The recently announced closure of Scotland Filmhouse cinemas and the Edinburgh International Film Festival has impacted on the French Film Festival UK plans, forcing them to cut back the number of films available.

Tori and LokitaThu 3 – Tue 8 November

Dir. Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne, France, 2022, 98 mins. Cast. Marc Zinga, Claire Bodson. Age rating tbc, guidance 15.

The fraternal directing duo continues their tradition of exploring issues impacting contemporary society through its youth with this tale of a young boy and a teenage girl whose invincible friendship helps them face the trial of living in exile. The Dardenne brothers were last in Cannes with Young Ahmed in 2019, for which they won best director, having previously clinched the Palme d’Or for Rosetta and The Child in 1999 and 2005 respectively.

“Masterfully crafted and unspeakably heartbreaking.” The Hollywood Reporter

BOOK TICKETS

Full TimeFri 11 – Wed 16 Novemberr

The César Award-winning star of Call My Agent! and My Donkey, My Lover & I, Laure Calamy demonstrates the phenomenal range of her talents in this unique thriller about a single mother who lands an interview for a job that might offer a better life for herself and her two children. Julie must employ her considerable resourcefulness to get across town during a transport strike, risking her current job as a hotel cleaner for the promise of something better. The film won Best Actress and Best Director awards at last year’s Venice Film Festival.

The Divide (15)Wed 24 – Thu 25 November

Dir. Catherine Corsini, France, 2021, 98 mins, subtitled. Cast. Pio Marmaï, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Marina Foïs, Aissatou Diallo Sagna.

Two women Raf and Julie (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Marina Foïs), a couple on the verge of breaking up, find themselves in an emergency ward bordering on collapse on the evening of a Parisian yellow vest protest. Their encounter with Yann (Pio Marmaï), an angry and injured demonstrator, will shatter each person’s certainties and prejudices. Outside, the tension escalates. The hospital, under pressure, must close its doors. Catherine Corsini directs at breakneck pace while mixing devastating humour with emotion that underpins where it hurts.

Petite Maman (12A)Fri 26 November – Thu 2 December

Dir. Céline Sciamma, France, 2021, 72 mins, subtitled. Cast. Joséphine Sanz, Gabrielle Sanz, Nina Meurisse.

In this radiant tale, Céline Sciamma crafts a mysterious and delicate exploration of childhood and grief. Following her grandmother’s death, eight-year-old Nelly travels to the old woman’s home to help her parents pack everything up. After her mother unexpectedly leaves, Nelly befriends a little girl in a nearby forest, an encounter that reveals a strange and beguiling new world. You don’t want to know too much about Petite Maman in advance to fully appreciate the quiet yet powerful magic of this deeply imaginative and tender film.

BOOK TICKETS

Titane (18)Sat 27 November – Thu 2 December

Dir. Julia Ducournau, France, 2021, 108 mins, subtitled. Cast. Agathe Rousselle, Vincent Lindon, Garance Marillier, Laïs Salameh.

One of the most provocative Palme d’Or winners ever, Titane is a blast of lawless inspiration. Alexia, a young woman who, following an accident in her childhood, has an unusual bond with cars, consummated by a strange encounter with one of the vehicles she writhes on in her job as a motor show dancer. When her murderous tendencies make her a fugitive, she disguises herself as a boy and forms a bond with the chief of a firefighting unit (French A-lister Vincent Lindon, venturing far outside familiar territory). Gender fluidity, techno-sexual delirium and full-on violence take Titane into the far reaches of genre futurism. It’s extreme-dream cinema that pulls no punches in its metallic KO.
