Ian Puleston-Davies, UK, 2022, 98 mins, some subtitles. Cast. Timothy Spall, Leanne Best, Mathew Horne, Mark Lewis Jones. This story takes us on a tumultuous journey from the height of T. Rex mania in 1970s Liverpool to the present-day poignancy of what would have been Marc Bolan’s 75th birthday. It captures the heady exhilaration of glam rock mania through the experiences of a group of over-excited kids from a local children’s home before a devastating road accident changes their lives forever. Years later, and still clinging to the adoration of her childhood idol, survivor Penny takes best friend and fellow Marc Bolan fan to visit his shrine in London but a chance encounter there catapults her back to the horror she had tried so hard to forget. Light-hearted comedy and supernatural chills abound in this inspirational story that explores the enduring legacy of childhood trauma and the life-affirming power of music.Manchester Film Festival 2023 – Audience AwardFor detailed information about the film's age rating and potential triggering contents, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “Content Advice” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Pawo Choyning Dorji, Bhutan/China, 2019, 109 mins. Language: Dzongkha, with English subtitled. Cast. Sherab Dorji, Ugyen Norbu Lhendup, Kelden Lhamo Gurung.Bhutan’s first-ever Oscar® nominee for Best International Feature is an enchanting comedy-drama about a daydreaming (but discontented) young teacher who is posted to a remote school in the country’s picturesque Himalayan highlands.Ugyen is a disillusioned teacher whose dreams of making it big in Australia as a singer are cut short when he is reassigned to a school in the village of Lunana. There, he finds the yak herding community lacking basic amenities such as electricity or even a blackboard but Ugyen is presented with the chance for a new connection to music, and an unexpected sense of purpose within the community’s embrace.Shot in staggeringly beautiful locations, balancing gentle humour with life-affirming drama, and performed with easy appeal by largely first-time actors, it’s an irresistibly uplifting tale about the power of a new environment to effect personal transformation. For detailed information about the film's age rating and potential triggering contents, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “ratings info” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Max Walker-Silverman, US, 2022, 81 mins. Cast. Dale Dickey, Wes Studi, Michelle Wilson.Faye is a lone traveller biding her time fishing, birding and stargazing at a rural Colorado campground as she awaits the arrival of Lito, a figure from her past who is navigating his own tentative and nomadic journey across the rugged West. Like the country music that has traditionally channelled the heartbreak and resilience of Americans in search of themselves and others, A Love Song weaves a lyrical and ultimately joyful refrain out of the transformative act of being alone, and reminds us that love can nourish and mystify at any age. Providing a brilliant (and too rare) showcase for veteran actors Dale Dickey and Wes Studi, A Love Song tells a small, stirring tale with quiet grace. For detailed information about the film's age rating and potential triggering contents, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “ratings info” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Ernst Lubitsch, US, 1940, 99 mins. Cast. James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan.Deftly directed by Ernst Lubitsch from a smart, funny script by Samson Raphaelson, The Shop Around the Corner is a romantic comedy in the finest sense of the term. Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) are employees at Matuschek and Company, a general store in Budapest. They are constantly at odds with each other, butting heads and disagreeing on almost everything. Both are enamoured of their respective pen pals, who serve as welcome distractions in their lives. Little do they know, they are each the other's pen pal and, despite outward differences, have unwittingly fallen in love through their letters. Sound familiar? It is the film remade as You’ve Got Mail (with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan) - but the original is better! The perfect film to relax with in the hectic run-up to Christmas. For detailed information about the film's age rating and potential triggering contents, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “ratings info” section: www.bbfc.co.uk
