Dir. Nicolas Roeg, UK, 1970, 101 mins. Cast James Fox, Mick Jagger, Anita Pallenberg, Michele Breton. Judith Noble has chosen Performance as the film to accompany her Professorial lecture, An Occult Avantgarde: magic, sexuality, gender and transcendence'. The lecture will take place on Thursday, 30 November 18:00 - 19:30. Find out more about the lecture and book free tickets here. One of the greatest British films ever made, in Performance the occult meets the counterculture meets the London underworld in Cammell and Roeg’s cult masterpiece. Starring James Fox, Mick Jagger, Anita Pallenberg and Michelle Breton, with music by Mick Jagger and Ry Cooder, and ostensibly a “crime movie about rock and roll” the film is a disturbing but beautiful mix of occult ideas that explores the nature of gender and identity, and the relationships between violence and creativity, hallucinogens and music, amorality, power and death.Donald Cammell was a key figure in the Luciferian London scene of the 1960s, His father had been a close friend of Aleister Crowley (who was the infant Cammell’s baby sitter!). Cammell worked with Kenneth Anger and would go on to play Osiris in Anger’s Lucifer Rising (1981). The script adviser was the mysterious counterculture figure David Litvinoff, associate of the Krays who modelled for painter Lucian Freud. LItvinoff was described by Cammell as a genius and the film’s guiding spirit.“I sneaked in to see this very X-rated film at the age of 15 in Manchester. More than any other film, Performance made me want to be a filmmaker” (Judith Noble)For detailed information about the film's age rating and content notices, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “Content Advice” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell + Pressburger Tickets £5 full price / £4 concessions.Saturday 9 December's screening: Celebrating the intoxication of dancing feet, Barbican Theatre presents a new dance performance featuring Tap, Flamenco and Street dance - the footwork will lead you toward the brilliance of Powell and Pressburgers' Red Shoes.Dance performance from 1.45pm (outside the front entrance and into the cinema)Film starts at 2.30pmDir. Michael Powell, UK, 1948, 135 mins. Cast. Anton Walbrook, Moira Shearer, Marius Goring. In a blazing manifesto for The Archers production company, dance, music, design and ‘high style’ combine in ‘total cinema’. In Powell and Pressburger’s visually ravishing masterpiece, a young ballerina is torn between the demands of love and art. Like the heroine of Hans Christian Andersen’s source fairytale, whose magic shoes compel her to dance, Victoria Page – played by real-life ballerina Moira Shearer – finds herself driven to breaking point by obsessive Russian impresario Lermontov when she’s cast in his ballet The Red Shoes. With its captivating behind-the-scenes insight into the creative process, and characters for whom art is more important than life itself, the film has proved an inspiration to filmmakers and dancers alike. The feverish Technicolor and astonishing ballet sequences for which this film is so renowned are as spellbinding as they are disturbing.

Powell and Pressburger weave their course of true love through flashes of surrealism, a life-threatening whirlpool and an ancient curse, disarming and enchanting in equal measure. But this is a film where small moments count the most – a cigarette passed between two windows or a slip on a ladder – as they build by stealth into something overwhelming. By the end we are left breathless and desperate to book the next night train and ferry to Mull.Restored by the BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation in association with ITV.

Dir. Robin Hardy, UK, 1973, 94 mins. Cast. Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Brit Ekland. In the 50 years since its original release, The Wicker Man has achieved true cult status as one of the most revered horror films in cinema history, despite a difficult production and heavily cut original theatrical release. The search for the fabled missing scenes has only added to the myth surrounding a film that still inspires filmmakers to this day. Telling the chilling story of a puritan Police Sergeant who arrives on a remote Scottish Island in search of a missing girl only to find the Pagan locals claiming she never existed, The Wicker Man is also much celebrated for its soundtrack, featuring haunting reworkings of traditional British folk songs. This restored 4K version of the 2011 Final Cut of the film is released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original. The screening on Friday 23 June will be introduced by Johnny Mains, award-winning editor, author and genre film historian. His latest book is Celtic Weird and he writes extensive film liner notes for Arrow and the British Film Institute. For detailed information about the film's age rating and potential triggering contents, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “ratings info” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Jean-Pierre Jeunet, France, 2001, 123 mins. Cast. Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Jamel Debbouze.Bursting with imagination and having seen her fair share of tragedy and fantasy, Amélie is not like any other girl. As she grows up, she becomes a waitress in a Montmartre bar. One day, she discovers that her goal in life is to fix up other people’s troubles by influencing their destinies.Possibly the most beautiful, fanciful, funny poem to unrequited love and to Paris ever made, Amélie is whimsical and wonderful but also has a rich seam of melancholy to counter the sweetness.

Dir. Martin Scorsese, US, 1980, 129 mins. Cast. Robert de Niro, Cathy Moriarty, Frank Vincent, Joe Pesci. The screening on Tuesday 25th April will include a Screen Talk before the film.Step back into the ring with Robert De Niro's Jake LaMotta, as Martin Scorsese's sprawling boxing masterpiece returns to cinemas in a knockout new 4K restoration. An uncompromising biopic of middleweight boxing champion Jake LaMotta – known as “The Bronx Bull’ and ‘The Raging Bull’ during his brief reign – LaMotta’s early lessons in life were to steal and to fight, but he channelled his tough childhood into the ring. This determination and rage turned him from a young hoodlum into a champion, but his drive for the title, his brutality outside of the ring and his almost-psychotic personal jealousy would destroy his marriage, his deepest friendships and the career he fought to build.Reuniting two titans of cinema – Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro – following their 1976 masterpiece Taxi Driver, Raging Bull was skilfully adapted from LaMotta’s tell-all memoir by Taxi Driver‘s master screenwriter Paul Schrader. The Screen Talk will be given by Dr Eddie Falvey, Lecturer at Arts University Plymouth. The Screen Talks series is an Arts University Plymouth Knowledge Exchange project supported by Research England’s Knowledge Exchange Funding for Smaller Providers. For detailed information about the film's age rating and potential triggering contents, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “ratings info” section: www.bbfc.co.uk
