Dir. Paul Sng, UK, 2023, 90 mins. With: Tish Murtha, Ella Murtha. Narrated by Maxine Peake. On Saturday 20th January, Emma Booth from Fotonow will give an introduction to the film and talk about Fotonow’s socially engaged approach to photography.Fotonow will also run a guided photography walk exploring Plymouth in the afternoon. Click here for more details and to book your space.Tish Murtha was a visionary photographer committed to documenting the struggle and inequality of the working-class communities that framed her upbringing. Her archive of work from Northeast England and London’s Soho of people on the margins of society in Thatcher’s Britain challenged inequality, yet she was unable to escape the poverty she documented and died aged 56, her work relatively unknown. Tish’s brilliant eye, her unswerving ethics and constant empathy are present in her images, yet little is known of the artist herself. In this feature documentary we follow Tish’s daughter, Ella, as she opens up her mother’s archive for the first time on screen to reveal a treasure trove of unseen images, artefacts, letters and diaries. For detailed information about the film's age rating and content notices, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “Content Advice” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Dir. Christopher Morris, UK, 2023, 86 mins, some subtitles.BAFTA-winning documentarian Christopher Morris invites us to slow down, as he films an ancient stone monolith for a year in a West Cornwall field. Filmed from Winter Solstice 2020 to Winter Solstice 2021, in which a string of unprecedented worldwide climate disasters occurred (met by weak global political resolve), and are simply revealed as just fleeting moments, under the ever-present unflinching granite gaze of the Longstone. Morris’s film immerses us in this quiet, direct-action of stillness, allowing us to take a breath and reflect on the planetary impacts of our brief human existence. For detailed information about the film's age rating and content notices, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “Content Advice” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Dir. Carol Morley, UK, 2023, 108 mins. Cast. Monica Dolan, Kelly Macdonald, Gina McKee.Director Carol Morley will be joining us for an introduction and Q&A for the screening on Friday November 17th. Read Carol Morley's letter to the audience."Sanity and madness have played on my mind almost my entire life. But when I tell stories I desire to bring something more than darkness - I want to bring humour, kindness, connection, hope and light: the possibility of something to make us all carry on." Carol MorleyFrom acclaimed British filmmaker Carol Morley, this dark and funny exploration of the growing friendship between two women as they hit the road is filled with adventure, humour and compassion. The film puts forgotten artist Audrey Amiss on the map. Inspired by her extensive archive of diaries, letters and art, the film weaves real events into an imagined journey as Audrey goes on a road trip with her psychiatric nurse. Deciding that she must have an exhibition of her art before it is too late, Amiss persuades her nurse, Sandra, to drive her from London to a gallery in her birthplace in Sunderland. Opting to not take the motorway, the two decide to take the long way round - trundling in Sandra's electric car on B-roads to their destination. But with so many deviations along the way, will they ever even make it?For detailed information about the film's age rating and content notices, you can visit the BBFC website and search the film title, then scroll down to the “Content Advice” section: www.bbfc.co.uk

Dir. Molly Manning Walker, UK, 2023, 98 mins. Cast. Mia McKenna-Bruce, Shaun Thomas, Lara Peake.Winner of the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, How to Have Sex is a vibrant and authentic depiction of the agonies, ecstasies and ride-or-die glory of young female friendship, from rising British filmmaker Molly Manning Walker. Three British teenage girls go on a rites-of-passage holiday, drinking, clubbing and hooking up in what should be the best summer of their lives. As they dance their way across the sun-drenched streets of Malia, they find themselves navigating the complexities of sex, consent and self-discovery. Captured with luminous visuals and a pitch-perfect soundtrack, Manning Walker’s directorial debut paints a painfully familiar portrait of young adulthood, and how first sexual experiences should – or shouldn’t – play out. With intro and post-screening Bad Sex Writing workshop with Plymouth Laureate of Words, Laura Horton on Saturday 18 November (film at 2pm, workshop at 3.55pm). Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell + Pressburger Tickets £5 full price / £4 concessions.Saturday 9 December's screening: Celebrating the intoxication of dancing feet, Barbican Theatre presents a new dance performance featuring Tap, Flamenco and Street dance - the footwork will lead you toward the brilliance of Powell and Pressburgers' Red Shoes.Dance performance from 1.45pm (outside the front entrance and into the cinema)Film starts at 2.30pmDir. Michael Powell, UK, 1948, 135 mins. Cast. Anton Walbrook, Moira Shearer, Marius Goring. In a blazing manifesto for The Archers production company, dance, music, design and ‘high style’ combine in ‘total cinema’. In Powell and Pressburger’s visually ravishing masterpiece, a young ballerina is torn between the demands of love and art. Like the heroine of Hans Christian Andersen’s source fairytale, whose magic shoes compel her to dance, Victoria Page – played by real-life ballerina Moira Shearer – finds herself driven to breaking point by obsessive Russian impresario Lermontov when she’s cast in his ballet The Red Shoes. With its captivating behind-the-scenes insight into the creative process, and characters for whom art is more important than life itself, the film has proved an inspiration to filmmakers and dancers alike. The feverish Technicolor and astonishing ballet sequences for which this film is so renowned are as spellbinding as they are disturbing.

Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell + Pressburger Tickets £5 full price / £4 concessions.Dir. Michael Powell, UK, 1945, 93 mins. Cast. Wendy Hiller, Roger Livesey, Pamela Brown.Headstrong Joan Webster (a wondrous Wendy Hiller) sets off, wedding dress in tow, to marry a rich older man on a remote Hebridean island. Stranded on Mull thanks to the weather, Joan finds herself struggling to cope with the unplanned turn of events. Powell and Pressburger weave their course of true love through flashes of surrealism, a life-threatening whirlpool and an ancient curse, disarming and enchanting in equal measure. But this is a film where small moments count the most – a cigarette passed between two windows or a slip on a ladder – as they build by stealth into something overwhelming. By the end we are left breathless and desperate to book the next night train and ferry to Mull.Restored by the BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation in association with ITV.
